The University of Utah Comprehensive Spine Program offers a combined one-year Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship. The fellowship provides comprehensive training in the management of complex spine and spinal cord disorders. Subspecialty programs include exposure to complex cervical spine disorders; spinal deformity surgery, including scoliosis; spinal oncology; and degenerative spine disease. The University of Utah Level 1 Trauma Center and the affiliated Huntsman Cancer Institute provide a large volume of spinal fractures and tumors. Image-guided spinal surgery, complex instrumentation, minimally invasive and endoscopic spinal surgery at all levels of the spinal column are performed.

The fellowship is designed for two spine fellows that will alternately rotate on the Neurosurgery Spine Service and on the Orthopedic Spine Services starting in July or August. Laboratory and clinical research opportunities are available and the completion of a research project is required during the fellowship. Successful applicants should have completed a Neurosurgery or Orthopaedic residency program. Fellows must apply for a Utah Medical License and Utah Controlled Substance License.

International applicants must be qualified for the fellowship program according to the same criteria used for all applicants to the program. For detailed information, please see our University of Utah Graduate Medical Education policy on Eligibility and Credentialing of Housestaff.  In addition, international graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate before they can be considered. A J-1 Visa (or citizenship or permanent residency or approval of application for permanent residency) is required for all non-US citizens in a training program who provide patient care. For more information, please see our University of Utah Graduate Medical Education policy on Eligibility and Examinations for International Medical Graduates.
