Residency & Non-Residency

Utah Residents

The University of Utah School of Medicine is a state-assisted institution. A minimum of 75% positions are offered to Utah residents. Information and guidelines for Utah residency classification may be obtained by visiting the Graduate Admissions website, by emailing residency@sa.utah.edu or by calling 801.581.3089.

Non-Residents

For consideration, nonresident applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Significant ties to Utah such as lived in, own property in or have first generation family members who currently live in Utah. Additional information may be required. 
  • Apply to the M.D. /Ph.D. program. Applications are available for U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents only.
  • Be specifically recognized as a member of a population group underrepresented in the physician workforce. (Africans and African Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Chamorros, Polynesians including Native Hawaiians, Tongans, Samoans, Filipinos, Tahitians, Maoris, Fijians, Niueans, Palauans, Chicanos/as and Latinos/as including Puerto Ricans, Mexican Americans, Central Americans and South Americans) 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS STARTING THEIR MEDICAL SCHOOL PROGRAM BEGINNING FALL SEMESTER 2011 and thereafter:  The University of Utah School of Medicine will not allow students who begin their medical studies with a Non-Resident classification to be reclassified. These students will maintain Non-Resident status and will pay tuition at the Non-Resident rate for the full duration of their medical school education.

Idaho Residents

The State of Idaho has contracted to provide access to eight positions each year at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Students must be certified through Idaho State University as residents of Idaho prior to applying. Accepted students pay Utah resident tuition. Students also pay a surcharge to a fund administered by the state of Idaho that is designed to assist in loan repayment for graduates who return to practice primary care in Idaho. Note:  If you have completed a residency certification for the WWAMI program, the University of Idaho will provide a copy of your certification to Idaho State University for verification for the University of Utah School of Medicine.  Students only need to submit a residency certification through one institution.
