Stethoscope Gift Program
In 2007, the School of Medicine Alumni Association instituted the Stethoscope Gift Program. The initiative was very well received by alumni and the student recipients. The purchase of a stethoscope by a freshman medical student is a necessary but expensive undertaking. With that in mind, the Alumni Association established the Stethoscope Gift Program to help connect alumni with those embarking on their medical training.
With a $135 donation, an MDF ProCardial C3 Critical Cardiac Care Edition Stethoscope is purchased for each student of the incoming class. The stethoscope is given to the student at the annual White Coat Ceremony.
If you choose to participate in the Stethoscope Gift Program please send your donation to the address below. Please include a business card to be given to the student. The card will be placed in the box with the stethoscope along with a letter informing the student of your gift.

History of the Stethoscope
In the pre-stethoscope era examination of the heart was done by percussion and palpation of the chest, but little useful information was obtained. Only occasionally did a physician see fit to place his/her ear directly on the chest and practically never elsewhere on the body. Read more of Dr. Hilmon Castle's history of the stethoscope.
