The goal of the Transitioning Into Practice program is to provide the physician in training with information and tools to ensure a successful transition from training as a resident or fellow into the practice of medicine. The University of Utah School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education office, the University of Utah School of Medicine Alumni Association, and the Utah Medical Education Council are proud to present this opportunity to guide new physicians to a rewarding and beneficial career.

Strategies for Success in Practice and Life: Camille Collett, M.D. ’83, Family Practice Physician “Success” is finding meaning and fulfillment in our personal and professional lives. Caring for and managing your professional life requires thoughtful consideration of lifestyle, family and career demands. This session will explore the personal meanings of success and suggest strategies for examining career goals in the context of other life commitments. |

Physician Employment Contracts: Jim Haisley, J.D., Associate General Counsel, University of Utah This presentation describes basic terms and conditions of typical physician employment contracts. Practical suggestions will be provided on approaching the contract negotiation process.

The Practice Interview-Keys to Success: Susan Terry, M.D. Medical Director U of U Community Clinics This presentation will provide advice on what potential employers are looking for in a candidate and what some resources are for looking for appropriate practice positions. It will provide an overview of the interview with an emphasis on questions that should be asked by the interview candidate. Interview differences related to specialty choice and practice type will also be addressed.

Panel Presentation, What I Know Now That I Wish I’d Known Then. Spencer deBry, M.D.’69-Moderator
Attendees will benefit from the advice and counsel of University of Utah alumni and colleagues who have worked in practice settings outside of the University of Utah, are making the decisions about hiring, or have recently gone through their own job search. Members of the panel will present their career experiences, type of practice, considerations from the employer side of the interview and issues candidates should consider when interviewing from a “been there, done that” perspective. |

A Financial Planning Conversation for Residents Preparing for Practice: Patrick Brady, VP Utah Medical Association Financial Services This session will provide attendees with strategies to help manage their loan debt. In addition, an overview of personal finance topics will be discussed including credit reports and college and retirement savings plans. |
