Thank you for visiting the Department of Anesthesiology Web page here at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center.  Our  56 faculty anesthesiologists, 39 resident anesthesiologists, and 7 certified nurse anesthetists provide anesthetic services and pain management for over 20,000 patients each year at the University of Utah Hospital, the University of Utah Orthopedic Center, the Moran Eye Center,  the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, and the  Salt Lake Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  We strive to deliver anesthesia care with a priority on patient safety and comfort.

Our department has an active residency program that has maintained national prominence both clinically and academically for over twenty years. Excellent training is available for candidates interested in an academic, research, or private practice career. The department is an integral part of the School of Medicine and the residency program is approved by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Within the past ten years, 100% of our graduated anesthesiologists have obtained certification from the American Board of Anesthesiology.

In addition to resident training, we sponsor several postgraduate education opportunities:

Significant anesthesia research is being conducted within our department.   Research interests include clinical pharmacology and pharmacological modeling, pulmonary physiology, pain mechanisms and acute/chronic pain management, non-invasive medical devices, and clinical information visualization. We have several research centers, including the Anesthesiology Bioengineering Laboratory, the Pain Research Center, and the Pulmonary Research Laboratory.
