Stephen C. Alder, PhD
Stephen C. Alder, PhD is an Associate Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine and Chief of the Division of Public Health at the University of Utah, where he holds adjunct appointments in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Health Promotion and Education. He is the faculty advisor for Global Health Scholars in the Honors College. Dr. Alder joined the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine in 1995 as a founding member of the Health Research Center and has been active in various forms of clinical and population-based research since that time. He holds Bachelor's and Master's of Science degrees in Environment and Behavior and Family Ecology, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Promotion and Education, with an emphasis in Community Health. Dr. Alder is President of the Association of Accredited Public Health Programs and a member of the Framing the Future: The Second 100 Years of Education for Public Health Task Force. Dr. Alder co-directs the Community Outreach and Collaboration Core for the University of Utah Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences, which is supported by one of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards. He also serves as the Chief Science Officer for the developing Institute for Health Care Transformation. His academic service includes being elected as the 2014-2015 President of the Academic Senate. Locally, he serves as a member of the Board of Health for the Salt Lake County Health Department. Dr. Alder’s scholarly emphases include global public health, community engaged approaches to health development, and integrating clinical care and the health of populations.
