Claire H. Clark, PhD
Graduated from the University of Utah with a Ph.D. in Psychology. She completed her internship at the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1981 and joined the faculty in the Department of Family & Preventive Medicine. Due to a dual interest in both teaching and psychotherapy, she also began working as a psychotherapist in private practice in 1983. Prior to that she taught high school psychology, worked as a girls counselor in Salt Lake County Corrections, and taught undergraduate courses at the University of Utah in the Department of Educational Psychology.
In 1985 Dr. Clark was appointed Assistant Dean for Student Advising and Counseling at the University of Utah School of Medicine, a position she held for 15 years. She developed programs for medical students in career advising, testing skills, stress management, support groups, and acted as therapist to medical students and their families. In 1995, she joined the University of Utah Bennion Center Advisory Board. As a result of that involvement she was supported and encouraged to bring Service-Learning courses to the curriculum at the School of Medicine.
Most recent interests and positions are course master of two Service-Learning, community-based courses for Freshmen and Sophomore medical students that were created during the medical student curriculum revision of 1997. In the summer of 2000 she joined Student Programs as Associate Director, assisting in the 3rd year Family Practice Clerkship and 4th year Family Practice Primary Care Preceptorship. Research interests are in working with medical students in a variety of biopsychosocial areas, doctor/patient communication, and the newly emerging field of integrative medicine. She is a Utah native who has always held family and nature as high priority. She has two grown daughters and one grandson.
