Kurt T. Hegmann, MD, MPH, FACP, FACOEM
Dr. Hegmann serves as the Department of Family & Preventive Medicine's Occupational and Environmental Health Division Chief. He holds the Dr. Paul S. Richards Endowed Chair in Occupational Safety and Health, which is the only endowed chair in occupational safety and health in the US. He is Center Director for the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, which is one of the USA's 17 Education and Research Centers sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. He also has adjunct appointments in the University of Utah's Departments of Internal Medicine and Mechanical Engineering and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. Dr. Hegmann graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine Residencies at the University of Utah that included obtaining a Master of Public Health degree. He then completed a Fellowship in Medical Education at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Hegmann's clinical interests include management of occupational injuries and diseases. His research interests include the epidemiology of musculoskeletal disorders and transportation medicine. He directs the University's Master of Occupational Health and Master of Science in Occupational Health degree programs. Graduate courses taught include: Occupational Epidemiology, Occupational Injuries and Diseases, and Clinical Prevention. He also enjoys teaching Science of Medicine to the medical students. National roles include trustee of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, chair of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Medical Review Board, and Editor-in-Chief of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine's Evidence Based Guidelines to address state-of-the-art healthcare for injured workers.
Qualifications:
Dr. Hegmann is board certified in Preventive Medicine in the subspecialty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and board certified in Internal Medicine. He completed medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1987. He completed Internal Medicine residency at the University of Utah in 1990 and a Master of Public Health and Occupational and Environmental Medicine residency at the University of Utah in 1992.
