Dr. Larson

Dr. Larson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Utah. Besides directing the IH Program, he also participates in a variety of research projects. For example, he is the Environmental Monitoring Leader for the National Children’s Study Utah Vanguard Center. As such, he has been responsible at both the state and national level for determining the monitoring and analytical methods, as well as frequency of sampling in homes of the participants in this study. He is involved with another university in evaluation of blood lead level in children in Pakistan. Other research projects he is involved in are 1.) evaluation of environmental exposures to women to determine if associated with endometriosis, and 2.) evaluation of environmental exposures and association with autism. He teaches a variety of courses related to occupational and environmental health (see below). He also directs research in areas related evaluation of occupational and public exposures to particulates, vapors and gases, and various types of biological contaminants (e.g., bacteria, mold, etc.). Rod has over 30 years of experience, 14 of which he spent working full-time with a major petro-chemical company.

Research Interests:
Development of monitoring methods for unique agents such as antineoplastics, methamphetamines, etc.; evaluating the solubility of various metals in synthetic lung fluid at various pH levels; developing exposure estimation programs for historical or potential exposures to chemicals; design of new ventilation systems for controlling exposures; assessing exposures for cause and effect relation with various health outcomes./p>
