Jim VanDerslice, PhD
Before joining the Public Health Program, Jim VanDerslice was the Senior Epidemiologist in Environmental Health at the Washington State Department of Health where he worked on a variety of environmental health issues focusing on exposures to environmental hazards and the subsequent health outcomes. His current research projects include: women's and children's exposure to chemicals in fish; infants' exposure to nitrate in drinking water and the relationship to methemoglobin levels; and improving surveillance of pesticide-related illnesses among farm workers. He was the PI on a five-year Cooperative Agreement with CDC to develop and implement new data systems to improve access and integrate environmental and health data. He has also worked to establish a collaborative of environmental epidemiologists in other states to standardize environmental health indicators.
Prior to joining the Washington State health department, he taught environmental health at the University of Texas, School of Public Health, and was the Assistant Dean for the El Paso campus for two years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences and Engineering at Humboldt State University (California), and his Master's and Doctorate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Environmental Sciences and Engineering with a minor in Epidemiology. His doctoral work focused on the risk of diarrheal disease among Filipino infants from drinking water contamination and poor sanitary conditions.
He plans on continuing his research into exposures via drinking water and foods, and looks forward to working across the Department to foster multi-disciplinary research.
