Stephen C. Alder, PhD
Dr. Alder currently serves as the associate director of the Public Health Program and is a member of the Master of Statistics: Biostatistics Track faculty. He is an assistant professor of Family and Preventive Medicine and holds adjunct appointments in Internal Medicine and Health Promotion and Education. Dr. Alder started with the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine in 1995 as a founding member of the Health Research Center. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in social ecology fields with emphases in statistics and research methods. He completed his doctoral degree in Community Health in 2001. Dr. Alder currently teaches Biostatistics I and II, Advanced Research Methods, Global Health, Evidence-based Medicine and Field Methods in International Health: Ghana. Dr. Alder is a member of the Biostatistical and Epidemiological Consulting Service, providing statistical consultation for the Pharmacotherapy Outcomes Research Center (PORC) and for medical investigators throughout the Health Sciences Center. He also serves on the executive committee of the Utah Health Research Network and on the board of the Utah Sports Research Network. Other clinical research efforts include workforce modeling to project future supply and needs for medical professionals. In addition, Dr. Alder has active cross-cultural community-based research projects, including studying ways to eliminate cancer outcome disparities among American Indian seniors (in conjunction with the Huntsman Cancer Institute and funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) and, in conjunction with the Utah Global Health Alliance, village health development in Ghana.
