Richard L. Backman, MD
Richard Backman, M.D. is a board-certified Family Medicine physician and Instructor (Clinical) in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pitzer College in Claremont, California in 1984, and obtained his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, in 1994. Dr. Backman completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1997. Since 2004 Dr. Backman has been the Director of the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics Madsen Family Health Center. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Utah Academy of Family Physicians. His professional interests include sports medicine, obstetrics and international medicine. He spent three years in the U.S. Peace Corps in Guatemala. Dr. Backman enjoys trail running, biking, skiing and helping raise two wonderful children with his wife, Sylvie.
