Occupational & Environmental Medicine

Prerequisites: First two years of medical school and consent of instructor. Topics: Most physicians receive no formal education in occupational medicine yet they are regularly confronted with work-related injuries and diseases in their practices. During this elective the student will be able to (1) learn about the highly varied settings for the practice of occupational & environmental medicine, (2) visit job sites to understand exposures workers encounter and how they relate to injuries and diseases, (3) take a complete occupational history eliciting physical and chemical exposure hazards and be able to correlate the information with the medical history and physical findings; and (4) recognize ethical issues in providing health care to industry, including women and reproductive hazards. Minimum 2-4 weeks..
