Sustainable Village Project: Ghana
The Sustainable Village Project has become a cohort of approximately 22,000 people in 16 rural villages approximately 25 kilometers from Kumasi, Ghana. These villages are part of an ongoing collaborative effort between Ghanaian and U.S. researchers to promote health in rural Ghana. This effort began in 2002 and is comprised of researchers from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the University of Utah School of Medicine, with involvement of the Barekese District Authority. This working group has teamed with local village leaders to address pressing health issues including those associated with malaria, schistosomiasis, and diarrheal illnesses. Activities have included disease surveillance, census registries, interviews, and community development efforts.
