Additional Scholarship Global Health Opportunities Outside of the University

Students wishing to perform their own research projects abroad or who wish to participate in global health initiatives sponsored by other programs (e.g. NIH) may wish to look into grants from agencies such as the federal government. More information can be obtained from the following sites:

The Directory of Grants and Fellowships in Global Health Sciences published by the Fogarty International Center (NIH) is "a comprehensive compilation of international funding opportunities in biomedical and behavioral research". http://www.fic.nih.gov/funding/directory_fellowships.htm

The NIH/Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program offers a one-year clinical research training experience for medical students (in advanced standing) or students enrolled in doctoral level programs at U.S. schools of public health, optometry, nursing, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine. This is an opportunity that allows highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH funded research centers in a diverse group of countries, including Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, Haiti, India, Kenya, Mali, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia. This is not a funding option for Office of Global Health programs. http://www.aamc.org/students/medstudents/overseasfellowship/

The Tylenol Scholarship is $250,000 fund that presents scholarships in the amount of $1000 or $5000 to students in the health professions. Although this scholarship does not directly involve global health, the funds would provide support toward program trips. http://tylenol.com/page.jhtml?id=tylenol/news/subptyschol.inc&s_kwcid=health%20scholarships|1523374013

The Gary Stewart Scholarship for Research in Public Health is a scholarship that supports educational research projects of graduate students in public health in the area of reproductive health, either locally or globally. Anyone may nominate a candidate for this award; qualified students may nominate themselves. http://www.arhp.org/rh2008/2008StewartScholarship.cfm

Finding friends or family members that are willing to donate frequent flyer miles is recommended for students looking for help in funding their trips abroad.
