Academic Bio

Michael Sheets, MD is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah in the Division of Cardiology, and an Associate Director of the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research and Training Institute.

His research goals are to understand the structure-function relationship of the voltage-gated cardiac sodium channel, and its molecular interactions with antiarrhythmic drugs and toxins. The experimental approach combines the measurement of the sodium channel gating currents, a direct measurement of the movements of the channel's voltage sensors that control its molecular conformational states, with the modification of cardiac sodium channels by site-directed mutagensis, drugs or toxins. The experiments are performed in fused mammalian cells made from a stable HEK293 human cell culture line expressing WT or mutant sodium channels.
