Research Statement

Dr. Manwaring's research is focused on identifying young children at-risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other communication delays, leading to opportunities for early intervention. She is currently involved in research examining: 1) early communication impairments, with particular emphasis on gesture use, as predictors of ASD and later language development, and 2) how early communication impairments correlate with brain abnormalities in both structure and function. The primary aim of this longitudinal research is to characterize the communication of toddlers at-risk for ASD in order to identify early behavioral and biological predictors of ASD and/or aberrant language development.
