Academic Bio

Andrew Southwick, M.D., is a board certified urologist practicing general urology at the University Hospital and Clinics on the clinical scholar track. He received a Bachelor of Science biology degree from The University of Puget Sound and his doctor of medicine degree from The University of Utah School of Medicine. He completed his urology residency at the University of Utah and a general urology and laparoscopy fellowship at the Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand. Currently his practice focuses on kidney stones, benign prostatic enlargement, laparoscopy, oncology, and he is the Chief of Urology at the Salt Lake City Veteran’s Affairs Hospital. He has participated in overseas medical exchanges to Haiti, New Zealand, Mongolia, and most recently as a sponsored exchange scholar to Japan. He is a member of the American Urologic Association, Utah Urological Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Society.
Dr. Southwick’s research and clinical interests include surgical management of bladder outlet obstruction, prostate cancer, renal cancer and kidney stone management. He has conducted a prospective, randomized trial comparing different energy sources for resection or vaporization of the prostate, and he was the principal investigator for the Salt Lake City VA’s participation in the Veteran’s Affairs Cooperative Studies Program #553 high risk prostate cancer trial. Future academic and clinical plans include adopting and studying new technologies for surgical management of benign prostatic enlargement with comparison to an existing database of patients, comparing complications and outcomes of open partial nephrectomy, investigating pre-procedural testing to reduce infectious complications following transrectal prostate biopsy and starting a robotic urologic surgery program at the Salt Lake City VA hospital.
