Robert H. Lane, MD is the August L.(Larry) Jung Presidential Professor, Division Chief of Neonatology, Program Director of the Neonatal – Perinatal Fellowship, and Associate Chair of Research within the University of Utah Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Lane also leads the Developmental Origins of Health Laboratories. He is a neonatologist that participates in the NICU coverage at the University of Utah, Primary Children’s Medical Center, and Intermountain Medical Center. His special interests include epigenetics, perinatal metabolism, and intrauterine growth retardation.
Dr. Lane's research program focuses upon the molecular mechanisms that connect early life events such as prematurity to adult diseases like diabetes. His specific expertise is how early life stressors impact upon the epigenetic characteristics of genes such as IGF-1 and the glucocorticoid receptor. Dr. Lane has been funded by the NIH since 1999, and he is presently serving upon multiple NIH sections, including the NIH CTSA study sections. More importantly, the majority of Dr. Lane's mentees have become faculty at medical schools across the country. His mentees have won also multiple awards, including the Pediatric Academic Society Resident Research of the Year, the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine Presidential Award, and the NIH Innovative Investigative Award. Presently, Dr. Lane has 5 talented junior faculty in his laboratory.
