Dr. James C. Hannon is Chair and a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. He has previously served as the Director of Graduates Studies and the Director of the Sport Pedagogy emphasis area. He received his B.S. in Business Administration (1993) from Southern Illinois University; M.S. in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Curriculum & Instruction (1998) from Northern Illinois University; and Ph.D. in Physical Education Teacher Education/Exercise Physiology (2004) from The Florida State University.

Research Statement

Dr. Hannon’s research interests are focused on pediatric physical activity and fitness measurement, as well as instructional and environmental interventions to increase physical activity levels in school and community settings P-12. Well planned and sustainable interventions are critical for improving the effectiveness of school and community physical activity programs. Specific physical activity measurement tools used in his research are pedometers, accelerometers, heart rate monitors, and systematic observation. Dr. Hannon’s research has been supported by both internal and external funding sources. Outcomes of direct interest include: academic achievement, healh-related fitness, physical activity levels, motivation and enjoyment of physical activity.
