Anandh Babu Pon Velayutham, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition & Integrative Physiology. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Madras and subsequently completed postdoctoral training at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Velayutham joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 2012.

Research Statement

Diabetes greatly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, which accounts for the largest number of deaths among American diabetic patients. Dr. Velayutham’s research aims to determine potential non-pharmacological, lifestyle-oriented strategies to reduce the cardiovascular complications in diabetes. His current research investigates the vascular effects of blueberries and strawberries with special emphasis on the microbial metabolites of berry anthocyanins and the molecular signaling mechanisms involved. These studies will provide key insights toward understanding the causal association between dietary berries, gut microbiome and vascular health.
