February 3, 2009 Please provide our office with a list of faculty retiring on June 30, 2009, including a couple of months before or after, as well as indicating those that are being recommended for emeritus status. Also add a list of all new and on-going phased retirement faculty with the anticipated end date and any extensions. Please send this information to Janis.Cannon@hsc.utah.edu in the Office of Faculty and Academic Personnel for Health Sciences (formerly SOM Fac. Admin.) by February 17th. Our office will compile the final list to be sent to the Office of Academic Affairs. Any lists received after February 17th will not be added to the March Senate agenda. Advance time is needed to prepare special certificates for retiring faculty being awarded emeritus status. Emeritus status can be awarded at the time of retirement, to a faculty member on the recommendation of the departments and colleges from which they are retiring. The process for granting emeritus status is as follows: 1. First, the faculty must vote to recommend it. 2. Next the chair would write a letter to the Dean reporting the faculty vote and making a recommendation. 3. The Dean would then write a letter or sign, indicating approval of the chair's recommendation and then forward this to our office. 4. Once approved by the Senior Vice President and President, the recommendation is forwarded to the Senate and Board of Trustees. 5. After all of this process is complete, then a certificate and letter is sent to the College from President Young. All 2008-09 retirees should be included on the list, indicating if they are to be awarded emeritus status. Please list the date of the effective retirement, and when the emeritus status will start. For example, if the faculty member is retiring on 6/30/09, then the emeritus status starts on 7/1/09. Thank you, Janis P.
