Faculty Appointment

Recommendation for Tenure, Full-time Clinical, Lecturer, Research, Visiting, and Adjunct faculty appointments are initiated at the department level and submitted successively, for evaluation, and recommendation, to the Faculty Administration Office, the School of Medicine (SOM) Appointments and Retention, Promotion and Tenure (A&RPT) Committee, the SOM Executive Committee, the School of Medicine Dean, the Associate Vice President, the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, and are then forwarded to Central Administration for final approval.

The chair of each department, in consultation with the department's faculty appointments advisory committee may determine the appropriate methods of recruiting candidates to be considered for faulty positions.

Recruitment methods shall be consistent with the University's strong commitment to equal opportunity and diversity.

Such methods may, and for appointments of regular faculty ordinarily will, include:

  1. Formation of a representative and diverse search committee, including members of the department faculty and when appropriate non-faculty and representatives from outside the department.

Administrative officers charged with overseeing the University's commitment to equal opportunity and diversity are available to assist departments in developing appropriate recruitment methods.

Use the appropriate faculty track criteria to determine the rank and track for prospective candidates. Appointments must have the approval of a two-thirds majority of eligible (Tenure Track) faculty, which is based on the proposed action(s) and rank of the candidate. 

Candidates for appointment to faculty positions should be given reasonable notice about the University procedures that will be followed for consideration of such appointments, including the roles to be played by the appointments advisory committees and administrators.

Adjunct faculty appointments are submitted by the Department Chair to Faculty Administration, forwarded to the Dean, the Associate Vice President, the Senior Vice President, and Central Administration for final processing. These can be submitted at any time.

Visiting Instructor appointments are submitted by the Department Chair to Faculty Administration, forwarded to SOM Executive Committee, the Dean, the Associate Vice President, the Senior Vice President, and Central Administration for final processing. Visiting Instructor appointments must be received by the appointment file deadline (1st Wed of every month) in order to be placed on the docket for the following month Executive Committee.
