Other Types of Leaves of Absence

Leaves of absence with pay may be approved under certain circumstances for sick leave, death in family, jury and witness duty and military leave. Sick leave is defined as a period of disability due to personal illness, illness of a spouse or their dependent children. Disability in reference to sick leave means the temporary inability to discharge the duties of employment as the result of mental or physical injury, illness, incapacity, or appointment for health care, and includes disability caused by pregnancy, false pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy and recovery there from. All benefits are continued during periods of leave of absence with pay.

Leaves of absence without pay are given for eligible disabilities, political leaves, full-time military service, etc. (refer to University P. & P. 2-22). Longevity for purposes of accruing vacation time is not lost during leaves without pay, however, vacation and sick leave benefits do not accrue. The employee may make special arrangements to have insurance benefits continued during leaves without pay.
