Drug Testing Policy

U of U P&P regarding Drug Testing

EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2009 DEPARTMENTS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SCHEDULING NEW FACULTY FOR PRE-EMPLOYEMENT DRUG SCREENING.

Upon receipt of the offer acceptance departments should immediately initiate the accurate criminal background request form http://www.hr.utah.edu/openposition/ ) and work with faculty to schedule drug testing.

You may schedule faculty drug screens in a couple of ways:
1.    If faculty are in-state you may schedule a drug screen at any of the IDT or University hospital locations through the HR drug screen site: https://www.hr.utah.edu/www/screen

2.    For out of state drug tests please email mike.watts@imro.net at IMRO.  You will need to provide Mr. Watts with the following information:

a.    Full name of faculty candidate
b.    Zip code where they wish to be tested
c.    Telephone number
d.    Date of Birth
e.    SSN
f.    Hiring Department

Mike will attempt to locate a site that is willing to accept our chain of custody forms.  Once a site has been identified IMRO will contact your faculty member with the details.  Please note that sometimes finding a site and following up with candidates may take upwards of three days.

Please remember that in order to submit the appointment Eform departments must include the clear to hire memo. Official clear to hire notification will not be sent until faculty have cleared both the criminal background and drug screen. It is recommended that the criminal background and drug test be completed simultaneously to avoid any delay in the clear to hire notification from Human Resources.

If you have any questions regarding this process please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Results

Positive results will be reported to designated School of Medicine representatives. Individuals receiving notice of a failed test have the option of requesting, in writing, a retest within 72 hours of receipt of a positive test notice, but must pay $50.00 for the retest at the time of the request; and results are confidential.

A revocation of offer of employment and the potential disqualification from employment or service for a period of 12 months from the date of the test will result from:

  • A positive result in which the MRO concludes there is not legitimate reason for the use of the controlled substance
  • Failing to report to the designated testing center at the designated time
  • Refusing to take a test
  • Attempting to alter or tamper with the specimen sample

All offers of employment are conditional based on the timely and successful completion of the University's pre-employment requirements.
