Faculty Administration

Schedule for Formal Evaluation of Clinical, Research or Lecturer Tracks

All auxiliary faculty appointments (Clinical-, Research-, or Lecturer-Track) are subject to University Policy & Procedures 9-2. That policy provides that appointments to those tracks are for limited-terms only.

All such faculty appointments end automatically each June 30th, unless the appointment is made by means of a written contract for a fixed term of up to five years. In the absence of such a contract, departments may choose not to reappoint clinical-, research-, or lecturer-track faculty. Department decisions not to reappoint such faculty are not subject to the SOM RPT Policy & Procedures.

Full-time clinical-track faculty undergo formal reviews during the third and sixth years of appointment (Table 3). Positive retention reviews do not require SOM RPT Committee review, and are sent directly to the Dean of the SOM. Majority non-retention vote by any voting body will result in review by the SOM A&RPT Committee prior to being sent to the Dean of the SOM.

Following the third- and sixth-year retention reviews, each clinical-track candidate will be formally reviewed every five years, using Clinical Faculty Review (CFR) procedures. Clinical-track faculty may remain at a rank (e.g., Assistant Professor, Associate Professor) indefinitely.

Full-time research-track or lecturer-track faculty undergo formal review for promotion only. The faculty candidate should have five years at rank for promotion action. Research-track or lecturer-track faculty may remain at a rank (e.g., Assistant Professor or Associate Professor) indefinitely.

Clinical-, Research-, or Lecturer-Track Promotion Requirements

  • File Checklist

The usual time in rank is five to six years, (i.e., at completion of the fifth or sixth year); however, the candidate must show accomplishment for promotion. More weight will be given to accomplishment than to time in rank. Promotion request can be withdrawn at any time with a written statement from the candidate.

Faculty wishing to be considered for promotion must meet with their department chair and/or RPT DAC chair to review criteria for promotion and make formal request for action to be scheduled for an upcoming RPT cycle.
