Votes for Award of Tenure
The SOM allows and encourages full-time clinical, research, and lecturer-track faculty to participate in the official departmental faculty meeting. The department chair and/or the department faculty should initiate a procedure to be used by the department to facilitate their participation. If the department incorporates non-tenure track faculty into the departmental advisory committee, all faculty should be provided the opportunity to participate and vote. However, these faculty do not meet university requirements for 2/3 eligible faculty.
Whenever practical, the department chair shall advise all faculty members on leave or otherwise absent of the proposed action(s) and shall request their written opinion and vote. Absent members' written opinions shall be disclosed at the official RPT departmental faculty meeting, and their votes will be counted the same as other votes. Absentee votes must be received prior to the meeting at which a vote is taken by the departmental faculty
2/3 Quorum Requirements:
In each department, all tenured (faculty that have received the award of tenure) faculty members, regardless of rank, meet requirements for the “2/3 quorum of eligible members.”
- 2/3 quorum of “eligible faculty” (tenure-track faculty) for each proposed action must be present at the official RPT departmental faculty meeting.
- Do not include faculty members who are on sabbatical or official University leave of absence
- Do not count the department chair or the candidate in determining the 2/3 quorum number.
- All other faculty members may participate in the consideration of candidates for retention if allowed by department guidelines.
- Departments will tally both votes from 2/3 quorum of eligible members as well as all other votes.
- Department will identify 2/3 quorum vote, and other vote accordingly on department minutes and official summary form.
- All votes will be tallied and taken into consideration by department, college, and university.
