When should I begin working on my FAFSA?

You can begin working on your FAFSA after January 1 for a Fall enrollment.

When is the FAFSA due?

The priority deadline for the FAFSA is March 15th. Applications submitted after March 15th may not be consider for campus-based programs.

Do I need to have my taxes done in order to complete the FAFSA?

Yes, it is best to have your taxes done before completing the FAFSA. However, if you do not have your taxes done before the priority deadline, you can submit your FAFSA, but you will be selected for verification before your financial aid application can be processed.

What does "selected for verification" mean?

You will need to complete the independent verification form and submit it along with signed copies of your tax returns, W2s, and any schedules.

How long does the verification process take?

Verification can take up to 4-6 weeks.

How much Financial Aid can I borrow each year?

You can borrow up to your Cost of Attendance.

What types of aid are available?

Federal Stafford loans, institutional scholarships, institutional loans, and private loans.

What grants are available (i.e. Pell)?

There are no Federal grants available to medical students. Pell grants are only available to undergraduate students.

Are there any scholarships I can apply for?

The medical school limited number of need-based institutional scholarships to be awarded each year. The amounts range from $250 to $2,500.

How do I apply for the institutional scholarships and loans?

To apply for the institutional scholarships, you must first complete and submit a FAFSA and then complete the School of Medicine Supplemental Application for Financial Aid.

When is the Supplemental Application for Financial Aid due?

April 15

When does packaging/awarding of financial aid take place?

Federal aid is packaged in May and institutional awards are made in June.

Do I have to complete a loan orientation every year?

Yes, loan orientations are required every year before financial aid can be disbursed.

Do I have to sign a new Stafford Loan promissory note every year?

No. A new promissory note only needs to be signed if you change lenders.

How can I tell if my financial aid file is complete?

You can view your financial aid information by accessing the Campus Information System.

Does the School of Medicine have its own Financial Aid Office?

No. All Financial Aid is processed by the main campus University Financial Aid Office. However, there is a financial aid liaison at the School of Medicine that can assist with basic information, i.e. assistance with completing forms, look up awards and disbursements, review checklists.

Where can I pick up or submit financial aid forms, i.e. verification, additional loan requests, appeals?

Most forms can be downloaded.

Forms are also available in the Medical Education Office, Room 1C105A SOM and at the Financial Aid Office on main campus in Room 105 Student Services Building Forms can be turned in at either location.
