Traveling Nobel Kiosk Program Summary
The Traveling Nobel Kiosk program is designed to share the celebration of Utah's first Nobel Prize. Dr. Capecchi's wish is to share this award with all who have supported him, his research and the University of Utah. The Nobel Kiosks allow him to share the pageantry and honor of receiving the Nobel Prize and the science that made it all possible.
There are Five (5) Nobel Kiosks. All are identical in their appearance and functions. A Nobel Kiosk will be made available to any community, (free of charge), who chooses to host it and meets the agreement requirements including all security requirements. To request a kiosk at your venue an Application/Agreement form must be completed and submitted for consideration. The Kiosks will be made available on a first come first serve basis. Once the Application/Agreement is approved the Nobel Kiosk will be made available at the earliest calendar opening. The Nobel Kiosk can remain on display at each location for up to 8 weeks. Additional time may be considered.
Each Kiosk is designed to be durable and is self contained with power supply battery back-up. The Nobel Kiosk will not require attention other than the initial, simple, step-by-step (power & internet access) set-up.

Educational Components
The "Genetic Science Learning Center" will provide examples of some of the research being conducted at the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics and Dr. Capecchi's accomplishments.
The EIHG website's link can be forwarded to the view by providing their e-mail address, which will enable the viewer to investigate our department further to learn more about other human genetic research studies and keep informed of new research discoveries.
Mario in Print is our way of sharing more information about Dr. Capecchi and his extraordinary life and work. By providing their e-mail address the individual viewer can receive articles and papers written about Dr. Capecchi and his research. This gives the individual viewer the opportunity to take a closer look at these documents at their convenience.
Q&A
One of Dr. Capecchi's greatest joys is in answering questions. The Nobel Kiosk makes it possible for the individual viewer to ask a question of or make a comment to Dr. Capecchi. The question is downloaded to a EIHG server and directed to Dr. Capecchi who will answer their questions and send the answer to their personal e-mail.
Supporting Research
Genetic research offers a world of possibilities that will affect all of us. Through the research being conducted at EIHG, we are discovering ways to fight human diseases, such as cancer, heart, Alzheimer, and Parkinson's diseases (to name a few) thus improving the quality of life for millions who suffer.
Research of this caliber requires time, commitment from gifted scientists, and it costs a great deal money. The individual viewer can make a difference in this life saving research. A small donation can make a big difference. Each kiosk has the capability of accepting a credit card donation in support of genetic research.

The Nobel Kiosk is a self-contained, interactive, display that contains the following components:

Every precaution has been taken to ensure the proper functions of the Nobel Kiosks. Extensive beta testing has been conducted on the touch screen computer program to ensure its continuous function. A battery backup supplies power during short power outages and protects the kiosk computer during electrical interruptions such as storms when power surges may occur.
Each kiosk has the ability to be connected to the internet through a Wireless connection or Ethernet connection depending on the host venues connectivity capabilities. This connection is for the purpose of credit card processing.
The Credit Card Readers were installed to enable the individual viewer to provide financial support to the research being conducted at EIHG. This easy and secure way of contributing to world renowned genetic studies at the University of Utah, offers the individual viewer the ability to make a tax deductible donation in a safe and efficient way. All information provided by the individual viewer is passed through the Nobel Kiosk via a certified internet program for processing to a secure bank authorized processor. Each donor will receive an e-mailed acknowledgement of donation and will be mailed a hard copy tax deductible receipt.
No credit card information will ever be stored anywhere, not through the kiosk, the University of Utah, the Department of Human Genetics or the Host Venue. The information is collected for the specific purpose of the single donation transaction.
The Sharing of Personal Information
Although there will be some data collected to determine the volume of Kiosk use and for receipt purposes the data collected will be used only within the department of Human Genetics and will not be sold or otherwise used; therefore, the individual viewer will not have to worry about getting unwanted e-mails.
No data, personal information or credit card information will be recorded or stored on the Noble Kiosk's internal computer, therefore there would be no security risk to the individual viewer, the Host Venue, the University of Utah or the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics.
Hosting Requirements (technical)
In order to setup the Nobel Kiosk and establish the interactive program, the following must be provided:

Internet Access- high speed- DSL equivalent
- IT/computer literate person to perform initial set-up
Host Venue Security Requirements
In order to be considered a Host Venue site for the Nobel Kiosk, your venue must meet the standard security requirements. The Kiosks must be located:

In a Public building i.e., library or government building

In a highly visible location within the building

In view of security personal and or
-
Security Cameras

And accessible only during business hours
The Host Venue may be required to pay for transportation costs to their venue. The Host Venue will be required to describe the exact location of the kiosk while at their venue. The Host will take responsibility for the Nobel Kiosk while it is in their venue throughout their scheduled visit. The Host may not relocate/move the Nobel Kiosk once the site has been established without express written consent from EIHG. A signed application and agreement must be on file prior to delivery of the Nobel Kiosk to the Host Venue. The Host Venue will be required to adhere to all aspects of the Host Venue Agreement.
Host Venue Set-up Instructions
Nobel Kiosk Installation Instructions
It is up to the hosting venue to provide an internet connection and power to the location where the kiosk will be displayed. A high speed connection (DSL or Cable) wireless or Ethernet is recommended. Please follow the instructions below:
- Open the rear panel of the kiosk with the provided key.
- If running an Ethernet cable from the kiosk computer to the secure DSL wall port or router through the hole in the back of the kiosk.
- Plug the power cable from the APC UPS unit into the electrical wall outlet.
- The computer power setting allows the computer to start automatically. However; if it doesn't start immediately, you may need to press the power button located on the UPS unit and or the power button located on the UPS unit.
- Replace the kiosk door and lock with the provided key.
- Carefully position the kiosk and secure the cords away from any walk ways to avoid accidental tripping.
Once the Ethernet cable and power cord have been plugged in and the computer turned on, no further configuration should be necessary.
