How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in the University of Utah residency training programs. The University of Utah School of Medicine offers 57 ACGME accredited resident/fellowship programs

Before getting started, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the following policies:

First Year Appointments

Most first year appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), a private, not-for-profit corporation established to provide a uniform date of appointment to positions in graduate medical education (GME). Each year, the NRMP conducts a residency match that is designed to optimize the rank ordered choices of students and program directors. In the third week of March, the results of the match are announced.

The NRMP is not an application processing service; rather, it provides an impartial venue for matching applicants' and programs' preferences for each other consistently.

The NRMP also conducts matches for fellowship positions in 34 sub-specialties, through its Specialties Matching Service. Those positions involve further training after completion of the initial residency program and lead to certification in a specialty (i.e., cardiology).

Please contact the NRMP at (202) 862-6077 or 1-866-617-5834 if you have any further questions about fellowship matches.

First Year Applications

The majority of the first year applications must be submitted through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). For programs that do not participate in the match, please contact that program directly or refer to the training program's website for further information.

International Medical Graduates

The Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is the starting point for all international medical graduates. Information concerning sponsorship, visas, examinations, DS2019 forms and other issues concerning anyone who graduated from a medical school other than one located in the United States or Canada, regardless of citizenship. This organization verifies training received outside the United States and Canada, even though the person may have US citizenship.
