Life Support Certification

Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support

All houseofficers in the University of Utah Affiliated Hospitals System are required, at a minimum, to take and pass ACLS certification at least one time. All new houseofficers are required to provide documentation of ACLS certification prior to the beginning of their training at the University of Utah. If a new houseofficer does not provide this documentation prior to their hire date, the houseofficer will not be able to begin work until they are in compliance with the ACLS policy. The only exceptions to the ACLS requirement are for Pathology and Occupational Medicine residents and Hematopathology fellows, who are not required to take ACLS.

All PGY-2 and above housestaff in Anesthesia, Anesthesia Pain Management, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic, Dental, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Child Neurology, Neurology, OB-Gyn, Ophthalmology, Podiatry Pulmonary Critical Care, Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and Urology programs are required by their houseofficer agreement and by institutional policy to remain current in ACLS.

All Houseoffices in Pediatrics and Pediatric Subspecialties are required, at a minimum to take and pass PALS certification at least one time. Documentation of PALS certification must be provided prior to the beginning of training or the houseofficer will not be able to begin work. Fellows in Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Pediatric Critical Care, and Pediatric Emergency Medicine are required by their houseofficer agreement and by institutional policy to remain current in PALS.

ACLS

Initial Certification

Current BLS card is required for registration. The cost for University Hospital Employees (including incoming housestaff) is $10.

The Initial Certification Class is two days, 8 a.m. to 4:30p.m. and 8a.m. to 1p.m.

Re-Certification Classes

Must be previously certified in ACLS. This class is one day, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

PALS Re-Certification Classes

Below is a list of PALS Re-Certification Classes for Housestaff offered at Primary Children's Medical Center. The fee is $125 for PALS the Initial Certification Class. The class manual is $35. Learn more about the classes and how to register.

Initial Certification

The Initial Certification Class is two days, 7:30 to 4:00 p.m. (day 1) and 7:30 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. (day 2)

Re-Certification Classes

This class is one day, 7:30 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. The fee for the Renewal Class is $45.

Some residency programs also require ATLS certification. Courses are not offered at the University of Utah, however, they are offered at LDS Hospital.
