Interventional Cardiology Program

Interventional Cardiology is a dynamic area of cardiology with emerging treatments and products for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Our Interventional Cardiology team manages patients at both University of Utah Hospital and George E. Wahlen Veterans Hospital, supporting the ICU and Emergency Departments in caring for acute and critical patients in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories.
Our physicians see patients in the outpatient clinic at the University of Utah Cardiovascular Center, providing patient consultations for:
- Coronary and peripheral artery disease
- Patent foramen ovale (PFO)
- Atrial septal defects (ASD)
- Heart valve stenosis
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
We use a multidiciplinary approach to the treatment of acute and chronic patients with cardiovascular disease, and work collaboratively with Preventive Cardiology, Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. We provide patient treatments, minimizing heart damage from coronary artery disease. We provide pre-intervention assessment, post-intervention/stent followup, and medical management of patients.
Our Interventional Team
Dr. Andrew Michaels is Director of the Interventional Cardiology Program and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. He has a 5 year NIH grant to study Myocardial Hemodynamics. He is currently conducting studies on strokes caused by PFO. His experience covers the full spectrum of Interventional Cardiology.
Dr. Brad Burlew is an experienced interventional cardiologist, recruited from the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Eugen Ivan is Board Certified in Interventional Cardiology. He is an expert in both coronary and peripheral vascular interventional procedures.

Promoting Interventional Cardiology
Our Interventional Physicians are currently conducting clinical trials to treat cardiovascular disease.
Recently there have been headlines about the safety of drug eluting stents, and also the treatment of migraines with PFO closure. Dr. Andrew Michaels, director of Interventional Cardiology at the University of Utah, makes this suggestion: "Make sure you are getting your information from a credible source." He also suggests searching informational sources such as www.pubmed.gov and talking with your physician.
People at the Heart of the Matter:
Barbara Weese had a small stroke or TIA (transient ischemic attack) in 1999. She was worried, always waiting for the "next one," hoping that if and when the next stroke happened, it wouldn't be massive. She underwent a closure of her PFO, performed by Dr. Michaels. Read her story.
