Information for Applicants
Applications for 2008 will only be accepted through ERAS Fellowships, a part of the Electronic Residency Application Service specifically aimed at fellowship positions.
The dates for the 2007 Medical Specialty Matching Program for 2008 appointments are:
July 1, 2006 MyERAS web site open for fellowship applicants
November 15, 2006 Applicants may apply to December fellowship program
May 31, 2007 ERAS Post Office no longer accepting changes to applications for 2008
June 2007 Match Day
July 1, 2008 Training begins for fellows
Eligibility
For application to the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship program, the applicant should be either:
- A graduate of a U.S. or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), or
- A graduate of a college of osteopathic medicine in the U.S., which is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or
- A graduate of a medical school outside of the U.S. who has completed a residency in internal medicine in a U.S. program and who has a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction.
Each applicant must also have passed Parts I, II, and III of the USMLE prior to the time they will begin training.
All incoming fellows are required to be licensed to practice medicine in Utah by the time they start their training at the University of Utah.
Application
Required documentation for program application is uploaded to the ERAS system by the applicant and includes:
- Fully completed Fellowship Application form
- Minimum of two letters of recommendation, to be forwarded directly to the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training Program by the parties providing the reference
- Curriculum Vitae and Personal Statement
- USMLE scores, Steps I & II
Additional documentation required from international medical graduates:
- Copy of green card, visa (J-1) or documentation of U.S. citizenship
- Valid ECFMG certificate with Clinical Skills Assessment certification
- Evidence of previous training in the United States
Selection
Application Review Process
The Program Director and a fellowship selection committee will review applications. Criteria as set forth by the ACGME Program Requirements, the Resident Recruitment Committee, and the University of Utah School of Medicine will be applied in the review process.
In screening applicants, reviewers look at:
The quality of letters of recommendation
The quality of applicant’s medical school and residency training
The applicant's potential for an academic career based upon previous research background
Interviews
Based upon the quality of the application materials and academic credentials, the applicant may subsequently be invited for an interview. Applicants will be interviewed by no less than four faculty members, as well as the Division Chief whenever possible, and meet with current fellows in the Hematology/Oncology Training program. During the interview process, the applicant will be provided with the following materials:
- Stipend/Compensation memo, to include information on compensation rates, benefits summary, and liability coverage
- Example of the fellow rotation schedule, monthly call schedule and monthly conferences
- Standards of Performance statement
- Work Hours and Supervision policy
- Vacation / Absence policy
- Form for international medical graduates to sign, if the applicant is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. By signing, the applicant agrees to obtain a J-1 visa before beginning training, if accepted into the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training program
Decision
Following the interview process, all participating faculty will submit their recommendations to the Program Director. These recommendations will be tallied and final decisions made by the fellowship selection committee. Specific criteria for selection are as follows:
The quality of letters of recommendation
The quality of Applicant’s medical school and residency training
The applicant's potential for an academic career based upon previous research background
Interview evaluation
Selected applicants will be admitted, pending receipt and review of USMLE Step III scores.
