Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program

EP stripTrainees who will have completed a Cardiovascular Diseases fellowship may apply for specialized training in our Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Program, directed by Dr. Mohamed Hamdan.

The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology (CCEP) Fellowship at the University of Utah is accredited by the ACGME and fellows completing the CCEP year are eligible to take the CCEP board examination administered by the ABIM. The ACGME stipulates that the CCEP year follow three years of general cardiology fellowship. However, additional clinical or research training can precede (or follow) the CCEP year.

For those entering from outside programs who have done or will do general cardiology training elsewhere, two years of training are recommended. The first year is a full twelve months of clinical training in cardiac electrophysiology. Trainees are involved in all aspects of arrhythmia care: daily rounds, outpatient clinics, electrophysiologic studies, ablations, pacemaker and ICD implantation and follow-up.

Fellows in the University of Utah's general cardiology fellowship program can include electrophysiology training within their three or four year training program.

Letter from Dr. Mohamed Hamdan, Program Director -Electrophysiology Fellowship

October 29, 2009

Dear CCEP Fellowship Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in the Clinical Cardiology Electrophysiology Fellowship at the University of Utah.

The Arrhythmia Service of the Cardiology Division is composed of five faculty members, Drs. Roger Freedman, David Rawling, Nassir Marrouche, Kimberly Selzman, Scott Wall, Nazem Akoum, and myself. We are actively engaged in clinical work and investigation at the University of Utah Hospital and the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center. In the past year we have performed over 900 invasive procedures, including 140 ablations, 270 ICD implantations/revisions, 75 CRT devices, and 220 pacemaker implants/revisions at the University of Utah Hospital. A similar number of procedures has been performed at the VA Medical Center. We are currently performing a large number of ablations of atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia and atrial fibrillation. We are active in the management of challenging problems in device patients, including lead extractions. We have busy clinics at the University Hospital, the Salt Lake VA Medical Center, as well as several outreach sites. A large range of research opportunities is available, including studies in cellular electrophysiology, whole animal physiology, and clinical projects pertaining to chronic resynchronization therapy, atrial fibrillation and investigational antiarrhythmic drugs and devices. Several nurses are employed by the Division to assist in clinical follow-up and protocols.

The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology (CCEP) Fellowship at the University of Utah is accredited by the ACGME. The ACGME stipulates that CCEP programs consist of one year of clinical and research training. Our CCEP training consists of 2 years; each structured with 11 clinical months and 1 research month. In addition, we offer and encourage the option of a third year of research training, prior to the 2 years of clinical training and will be prepared to offer funding to qualified and interested applicants. Fellows who desire CCEP board eligibility should have completed 3 years of general cardiology fellowship before starting our CCEP program as required by the ACGME.

Currently we are approved by the ACGME to recruit 2 dedicated clinical CCEP fellows per year. Applications for positions beginning in July 2011 will be accepted starting in January 2010. We welcome applications from non-U.S. citizens as well as U.S. citizens. Non-U.S. citizens must have a J-1 visa or be a permanent resident of the U.S. Please include a copy of your green card or visa (J-1) when you return the requested application materials listed below.
