Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

Two fellows are accepted into the program each year. Fellows will participate in over 300 interventional cases performed at the University Hospital and the Salt Lake Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In addition the University of Utah is a designated center for Trans Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

An ACGME accredited cardiovascular disease fellowship must be completed to be eligible for our interventional cardiology fellowship.  Our fellowship at the University of Utah is accredited by the ACGME. Fellows completing the interventional year are eligible to take the interventional board examination administered by the ABIM.

Mission Statement

Our interventional cardiology fellowship program at the University of Utah is a vigorous program that provides a wide array of exposure to interventional procedures, outpatient cardiology clinics, research and analytical thinking to become an excellent interventional cardiologist. Fellows in this program work closely with the board-certified interventional cardiology faculty in the clinical setting where they evaluate patients, provide a care plan and engage in follow up. In the cardiac catheterization laboratory, fellows are working side by side with the attending performing routine and complex cardiac interventions, particularly coronary interventions. They also participate in structural interventions, including PFO/ASD Closure, valvuloplasty, mitral clip, left atrial appendage closure and TAVR procedures. The program provides didactic lectures on a routine basis, given by well qualified faculty and aims to prepare the fellows for certification. The program also provides simulation exposure in collaboration with industry to enhance their skills. Interventional fellows are encouraged to publish during this fellowship.  Journal clubs are held on a monthly basis where important articles are reviewed by the fellows and discussed with the faculty. As the program has successfully started and maintained a structural program, the interventional fellows are exposed to many structural procedures, especially TAVR program where they work together with the structural fellow. There are 6 board certificate interventional cardiologists within this program and provide a wide range of expertise in peripheral interventions, structural cardiac intervention, complex coronary interventions including a well-developed CTO program.  Fellows are also involved in many of the clinical trials within the Division of Interventional Cardiology particularly and within Division of Cardiovascular in general.
