Training Program
GENERAL INFORMATION:
A fellowship at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center offers a highly academic educational experience with a Western flavor. Salt Lake City is situated at the base of the Wasatch Mountains, in the center of a vast recreational area. The skiing facilities at Alta, Solitude, Deer Valley, Brighton, Snowbird, and Park City are 30 minutes away. Other outdoor recreational opportunities include fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, boating, and exploring deserts, scenic attractions, national parks, monuments, and Western history. The climate offers distinct seasons with a very low humidity and pleasant temperatures. Cultural activities are numerous and include the Utah Symphony Orchestra, Utah Opera, Ballet West, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and many others. Salt Lake City has professional baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey teams. There are numerous apartments and houses available in close proximity to the SOM and hospitals. The Division of Gastroenterology, in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine, offers a three-year program in gastroenterology and hepatology. Two fellowship positions are open to applicants each year. The program is conducted by: Kathryn A. Peterson, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine and Fellowship Program Director. The Departments of Pathology, Pediatrics, Pharmacology, Radiology and Surgery also participate.
CLINICAL TRAINING:
The GI Division provides consultation services for inpatients on all general and specialty wards, and conducts outpatient clinics for patients referred to the Division. Trainees participate in all of these activities at the University of Utah Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and VA Medical Center. Trainees perform a wide array of procedures including: EGD, colonoscopy, endoscopic biopsy, polypectomy, liver biopsy, argon plasma coagulation, feeding tube placement, enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy. In addition, 3rd year fellows forcus on therapeutic endoscopy, procedures, including ERCP, and rotate on the liver transplant service. Fellows also have the option to participate in EUS procedures.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
Trainees assist in carrying out the Division's teaching assignments. These include student courses in GI organ systems, GI clinic, and gastrointestinal electives as well as teaching housestaff through patient consultations, seminars, and presentations. Fellows conduct monthly journal clubs and advanced GI topic reviews with the faculty.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES:
A number of research projects are in progress in the Division. These include the broad areas of gastrointestinal disease and physiology, liver disease, and gastrointestinal genetics. All trainees are required to do a research project. Liaison with other departments in the School of Medicine is encouraged.
REQUIREMENTS AND STIPENDS:
Applicants should have completed three years of medical residency or equivalent experience. Stipends for trainees have been established by Department of Medicine policy in accordance with policies recommended by the National Institutes of Health, Training Grants Branch. Stipends depend on previous experience and number of dependents; therefore, they are similar nationwide. Stipends for applicants who can qualify for research fellowships are set by the outside agency granting the fellowship. Licensure in the State of Utah is required. The program is modified for special situations by arrangement with the Chief, e.g., to meet the training needs of a candidate with specialized research experience or one with previous clinical training in gastroenterology.
