Post-Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS)
Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a long-term complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It is best characterized as a chronic syndrome of clinical signs and symptoms:
• Pain
• Swelling
• Parasthesias
• Varicose veins
• In severe cases, venous ulceration in the affected limb
PTS occurs in the up to half of patients with DVT, and has a significant impact on quality of life and health care expenditures. Studies are underway to determine effective methods to identify patients at risk for developing PTS and to prevent and treat PTS. Currently, options for PTS prevention and treatment are limited, and most therapies are targeted toward symptom relief.
The key to reducing the impact of this complication is for both patients and providers to:
• Be more aware of PTS
• Take proactive steps to identify patients at risk for DVT and PTS
• Employ appropriate preventative strategies for DVT and PTS
The University of Utah Health Care Thrombosis Service and the Venous Disease Coalition, Vascular Disease Foundation, have developed a comprehensive provider and patient education and prevention resource for post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS).
All educational material provided to you on this website is evidence-based and approved by expert clinician faculty from the University of Utah and McGill University in Canada.
