The Division of Geriatrics began in 1986. Thanks to the creativity and leadership of its founding Chief, Gerald Rothstein, MD, geriatric medicine has become a part of the academic and clinical fabric of the University of Utah School of Medicine and is an integral part of the Department of Medicine.
Today the division is home to 20 full-time faculty members, 25 staff members, and trains an average of 5 pre- and post-doctoral trainees each year. To advance the understanding of the causes and consequences of aging, our faculty investigators are supported by $2.4M (annual direct costs) in research funding. Division faculty provide training for the next generation of physicians, other health care providers, and research investigators. The division’s clinical providers provide state of the art care for older patients in its outpatient clinics, hospital programs, and in long term care settings.
