Metabalomic Core
The Metabolomics Core facility at the University of Utah is attempting to bridge the knowledge gap between phenotype and small metabolites, especially in the analysis of the mitochondria metabolome. To perform this task the core facility has recently purchased a MicroMass GCT Premier, a highly accurate time of flight mass spectrometer mated to a gas chromatograph. This instrument is able to analyze the small molecules involved in cellular metabolism in both a qualitative and quantitative fashion.
The Metabolomics Core Facility focuses solely on the analysis of small metabolites. Within this mission several types of services are provided.

- Experimental Design
This facility provides expertise in the area of experimental design. A series of validated protocols for biomaterial generation and metabolite work-up are available. These protocols are designed to ensure consistent, repeatable results. They cover areas such as media type, growth conditions, method of harvest, storage and metabolite work up. These protocols are derived from the literature and have been modified as needed. - Sample Preparation
The facility analyzes the metabolite after partial sample work up. The facility performs modification chemistry on each sample as needed. Each biological sample submitted is analyzed in triplicate to develop reliable raw data. - Data Analysis
The facility also assists in data analysis. Data is analyzed using MarkerLynx software for principle component analysis. Other statistical methods are employed as needed. These include discriminate analysis, artificial neural nets, rule induction, metabolic control analysis, and Bayesian belief networks. The original data, metadata, and experimental analysis are saved to our server as well as stored on DVD for each investigator.
