Charles B. Smith, M.D.

Charles B. Smith, MDDr. Smith trained in Infectious Diseases at Boston City Hospital and was a Research Associate at the NIH in the respiratory virology section. He served as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Utah from 1969 to 1980 and then moved to the Salt Lake VA as Chief of Medicine. From 1990 to 2000, he served as the Chief of the Medical Staff at the University of Washington VA hospital. His research interests have included antimicrobial clinical pharmacology, respiratory viral infections in patients with COPD, and the role of viral infections in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. In recent years his research interests have focused on health care quality improvement and medical ethical issues related to infectious diseases. Dr. Smith periodically attends on the ID service at the VA Hospital and he is a regular participant in the Division of Infectious Diseases research and clinical conferences.
