Residency Tips
Tips To Help You Succeed
- (On your CV) double-check your contact information to ensure that a program director could easily reach you quickly and easily if necessary. Since most programs will communicate with you entirely by e-mail, double check your e-mail address.
- Is your e-mail address professional? The inappropriate and immature examples we have encountered include partygirl@hotmail.com and ralphlaurenmd@aol.com. You've worked hard to create a specific image throughout the entire application. Need we say more? If you don't have a professional e-mail address, now is the time to create one. Your e-mail address should simply be your first and last name (e.g., meljackson@hotmail.com, jayapatel@yahoo.com).
- While most communication between an applicant and program occurs via e-mail, sometimes applicants are contacted by phone. "Hey dude, you know what to do at the tone" might suffice for your buddy, but replace this with something more professional during the residency application process: "Hello, this is Rodrigo Martin. Thank you for calling, but I'm not available to take your call right now. Please leave your name, telephone number, and message, and I'll return your call as soon as possible."
- In the event that a program director calls you at home while you are away, educate those at home in how to answer the phone politely. Ask them to note the name of the person calling, the return number, the name of the residency program, and a good time to call back. Afterwards, have them contact you as soon as possible so you can return the phone call.
- The order in which you present the elements of your CV is important. Program directors are no different than you or I. They will read your CV from top to bottom and from left to right. Don't place your most important accomplishment at the end.
