In 1969 he made a decision and entered the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Wisconsin. He was in the first MSTP Graduating class from Wisconsin and was awarded MD and PhD (biochemistry and physiology) degrees in 1975.

The Program grants both the MD and PhD degrees to students meeting the requirements of the medical school, the graduate program, and the MD/PhD curriculum. The program generally will take seven to eight years to complete. The MD/PhD Training Program is an ideal choice for students desiring to pursue a career in research/academic medicine. The program is designed for students who are:
- Committed to working in both aspects of medicine - clinical research
