Medical Scholars Program
Medical Scholars Program Announcement
Program Application Deadline: September 1, 2011
A program patterned after the Medical Education Scholars Program at the University of Michigan, designed to enable medical school faculty who are dedicated to education to develop greater skills as teachers, pursue scholarly activity in the field of education, and to become part of the educational leadership of the school.
Program Description:
The program will include a formal curriculum in education theory, application, and research, individualized guidance from mentors, collaboration on education issues, problems, and research investigation.
The Program:
1. Formal Curriculum
A nine month program meeting every two weeks to cover a core set of topics. These will include 5 core content areas:
Designing Medical Education Curricula
Teaching in medical education settings
Evaluating teaching and curriculum content
Building a career in education and achieving high quality educational decisions
Designing, conducting and analyzing educational research
2. Consultants and Experts
We use a pool of national educational experts to teach, to mentor scholars, and to serve as consultants in the educational process. Members of our own faculty with demonstrated teaching skill will also function as consultants, teachers, and mentors for the program.
3. Program Direction
The Program is administratively based in the Dean’s office of the School of Medicine under the direction of Larry Reimer, the Associate Dean for GME. The office of medical education provides administrative support in terms of correspondence, preparation of educational materials, and scheduling.
4. Individual projects
Each scholar will expected to identify an educational issue of interest from which to develop a research protocol for study. The project will provide the scholar with the opportunity to apply principles, skills, and methods acquired in the program toward educational research and development. Scholars will work on their project throughout the calendar year, and projects in general will be a topic for discussion that will provide a practical application of the core concepts of the program. Sessions to discuss, critique, and support the individual projects will continue monthly during the second half of the year.
5. Scholar group
The number of scholars admitted to the program will be 6-8. The group will meet for ½ day twice a month to receive formal instruction and guidance in developing the research project. Department chairs are expected to arrange release time for scholars to attend all activities of the program, and to be able to complete their research project.
6. Application to the Program
Faculty who are interested should submit a 1 page application that includes:
Name, Title, Address
A brief description of current educational activities
A personal statement concerning goals in attending the program
A statement of an educational issue that the individual wishes to address
A letter of support from the Department Chair
A current CV
Preferences for acceptance into the program will be given to individuals who have significant responsibility for medical student education.
7. Scholar and Program Support
Each scholar will receive up to $10,000 of their salary directly from the School of Medicine to provide release time from departmental activities. Money will be apportioned in relationship to the number of sessions attended. Additional funding will be provided to support research projects, presentation, and publication costs.
