Huntsman Cancer Institute
Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) was founded by Jon M. Huntsman Sr, philanthropist, industrialist, and cancer survivor, and his wife, Karen.
The HCI is a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, meeting the highest national standards for cancer care and research, and is known for cutting-edge cancer research including the largest genetic database in the world. It is located immediately east of the University Hospital. HCI's approach to fighting the war on cancer is three-fold:
- research into the fundamental causes of cancer, particularly genetics
- team approach that features physicians and researchers working side-by-side to treat specific types of cancer; and
- an outreach program that educates patients, families and the public.
It receives support for its scientific endeavors, and is also a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (a coalition of leading cancer centers from around the country that sets the standards for cancer care).
The Huntsman Cancer Institute has been created, through the generosity of the Huntsman Family, to find the causes of cancer, to develop new and better treatments, and to prevent people from ever developing cancer. A second tower is now complete and houses research laboratories and clinical rooms in the continuing battle against cancer.
Neuro-oncology out-patient clinics are located in this tower, and are supported by an infusion center, state of the art neuro-radiology, and a multidisciplinary network consisting of neuropathology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, and social work.
