Jennifer Majersik
Jennifer Majersik is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. After receiving her B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd College (Claremont, CA), she served four years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, working as a scientific analyst at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for the National Air Intelligence Center. She then attended medical school at University of Vermont (Burlington, VT) where she fell in love with the neurosciences. She completed internship and neurology residency at the University of Utah and vascular neurology fellowship at University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI). While at Michigan, she earned a master’s in clinical research design and biostatistics through their School of Public Health.

In 2008, Dr. Majersik returned to Salt Lake City to establish her vascular neurology practice within the Stroke Center at the University of Utah. Her clinical practice includes evaluating and treating acute strokes in the hospital and emergency department, managing patients on the inpatient general neurology service, and providing outpatient consultation in the stroke clinic, including urgent referrals.

From an early age, Dr. Majersik has been an enthusiastic teacher and was recognized during residency as Neurology Resident Teacher of the Year in 2204 and 2005. To expand that teaching to the next generation of stroke neurologists, she is currently leading the effort to obtain ACGME certification for a vascular fellowship at the University of Utah.

One of Dr. Majersik’s passions is to improve community education so that patients and families understand the importance of calling 911 as soon as a stroke happens, since the first few hours after a stroke are a critical therapeutic window. Thus both her research and her community outreach efforts have focused on this issue by characterizing presentation time delays in ischemic stroke patients in the U.S. and Mexico and by providing local education to the lay public. Here in Utah, she has already begun to work with the Department of Health Stroke Care Task Force to provide consultation on how to improve stroke care in Utah. In addition, she hopes to use her training in research methodology to expand her research into the genetic underpinnings of stroke in Utah.
