Kelly Murphy

Kelley Murphy graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Public Health. She was commissioned in the US Army and served for eight years as a Chemical Officer, with much of her service in the 82nd Airborne Division.  After leaving active duty she returned to research, working as an analytical morphologist at a biotechnology firm in Washington state.  She subsequently came to the University to Utah, where she worked in cancer and cardiovascular genetics research before joining the Swoboda Neurogenetics Laboratory in 2006.  She performs basic bench research, working with both Dr. Swoboda and Dr. Alice Schmid at the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics. This collaborative work is focused on bridging the gap from bench to bedside in therapeutics for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.  Kelley has also helped to establish a local biobank database, a resource for DNA, RNA and tissue/pathology samples obtained from subjects participating in clinical studies within the Project Cure SMA Investigator’s Network, in order to further facilitate translational research efforts.
