Department of Neurology

Letter from the Director

David Roman Renner, MDFrom the Residency Director . . .

Visitors and patients at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center usually leave their experience with a sense of satisfaction, and an understanding that amidst an informal atmosphere of teaching lies exceptional medical care. Our department of neurology is unique among residencies. We serve patients from an exceptionally large catchment area given our standing as the only hospital providing tertiary neurologic and neurosurgical care in the intermountain west. Patients from nearby states travel miles via air and land seeking neurologic care for both in-patient and out-patient services, and thus by virtue of acuity, fill our service with diagnostically challenging yet interesting and uncommon cases. As our residents see disorders of which others may only read, their clinical skills are strengthened, their diagnostic accumen sharpened, and they progress through a program which prepares them to enter into either research or clinical practice. Throughout their residency, they gain responsibility, and with each subsequent year, our residents become integral in the teaching which which is so highly valued within our residency.

Our residency is of medium size, committed to the education of residents on a personal level. We are well-represented across the subspecialties of neurology, and provide training on the cutting edge of medicine. For those individuals seeking excellence in neurologic training through close mentoring and hands-on practice, the University of Utah's program is unlike any other. We invite you to look at our program, and trust that you will appreciate the reasons why we are proud of our patient care, education, and research.
