Advisors & Evaluations

Resident Advisors
Each entering resident chooses a faculty member to act as the resident's advisor. Residents may remain with the same advisor all three years or pick a different advisor at the end of the first or second year.

Evaluation of Resident Performance
Resident performance is evaluated at the end of each month's rotation by both attendings and by peer residents. Performance evaluations are filled out by various people within one’s sphere of influence. This 360-degree evaluation is filled out by nursing staff, medical students, residents, attendings and by peer residents. Feedback concerning performance is provided to the resident directly, on an informal basis, by the attending with whom the resident worked. Residents also meet on an individual basis twice yearly with the department chair for review of overall performance and specific areas of strength or areas needing more effort. Each resident is also encouraged to meet with his or her advisor to review issues of performance and plans for future elective rotations or areas of study twice a year.

Resident In-Service Examination (RITE) and Neurological Clinical Evaluation Exercises (NEX)
A practical goal of the neurology training program is to prepare each resident to achieve certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The certification examination process consists of a written examination.

The Department of Neurology assists residents in preparing for the written examination process by administering the Residency In-service Training Examination (RITE) each spring. In addition, residents also participate in the live examination of patients in 5 areas of neurology. These objective structured clinical examination exercises are a required component of resident training, and are performed throughout each resident’s training. These tests are similar to the written and oral board examinations, and are meant to help residents organize their study program toward board certification. Resident performance on both examinations is reviewed on a confidential basis with the resident by the department chair, though their scores are not factored into their residency performance.

Completion of the RITE and NEX is requisite for advancing to subsequent years of residency. Our residents benefit greatly from their experience with both the RITE and NEX. Our first time test taker pass rate for our residents who take their licensing exam is 100%. All graduates from our residency are strongly encouraged to become board certified via the ABPN (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology).
