Department of Neurology

Conferences

The training of a neurologist must be based upon a sound understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Each week, formal lecture series and grand rounds provide an extensive program of didactic lectures and experiences through which the neurology resident gains familiarity with each of these areas.

Annual Conferences

Annual Course in Neuro-Ophthalmology:
This is held each year as a series of weekly lectures in January, February, and March. The course provides an overview of neuro-ophthalmology with particular focus upon anatomy and physiology of the visual system as it applies to the brain and to neurological disease.

Leonard Jarcho Lectureship:
This is an annual lecture held in honor of Leonard Jarcho, the founding chairperson of the Department of Neurology. The lectureship brings in a speaker of national reputation to discuss important aspects of neurology.

Landa Professorship:
This Professorship has been established to sponsor an annual lecture by a physician or investigator of national reputation in the field of neurodegenerative disorders.

Western Intermountain Neurological Organization:
The Western Intermountain Neurological Organization is an association of neurologists throughout the intermountain west. The organization meets twice yearly in Salt Lake City. Each meeting is devoted to one or two specific topics and brings one or more nationally recognized physicians to deliver the major lectures. The meeting also provides an opportunity for neurology residents to present data from original studies, and for physicians at the University and in private practice to share cases of particular interest.

Annual Resident Presentations:
Annual resident presentations are a means of encouraging each resident to explore an area of clinical neurology or basic neuroscience in depth. Early in the year, the resident selects a case report or series, topic review, or project in clinical or basic research which he or she will investigate over the course of the year. The resident prepares a brief write-up of the topic which is submitted to a faculty committee for review. Each resident then has the opportunity to present his/her work at the spring meeting of the Western Intermountain Neurological Organization held in Salt Lake City, or at Adult Neurology Grand Rounds. Residents are also encouraged to prepare their work for publication and to present their data at national meetings.
