Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship

Nathan C. Avery, MD, Memorial Fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery

The pediatric neurosurgery fellowship consists of a 12-month clinical rotation at Primary Children's Hospital. With four attending pediatric neurosurgeons, the neurosurgical service is active and includes exposure to a broad range of pathology. Approximately 1,000 pediatric neurosurgical cases are performed each year.

Fellowship Requirements

In keeping with the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Pediatric Neurosurgical Fellowships, all applicants must have a doctor of medicine degree and must have completed an accredited neurosurgical residency program. The fellow must obtain a Utah medical license prior to beginning the fellowship.

Responsibilities

In addition to operative and academic responsibilities, the fellow is charged with managing the service, sharing primary call with two neurosurgical residents, and participating in the outpatient clinics on a scheduled basis.

Conferences and Clinics

The fellow will also attend the following conferences and clinics: Department case review, morbidity and mortality, and grand rounds, held weekly on Wednesday mornings Pediatric neuroradiology conference, held weekly on Friday mornings Pediatric tumor board, held on the first Friday of each month Staff clinics, held Monday–Thursday; Spina Bifida clinic is held each Friday.

Compensation, Vacation, and Housing

The fellow is compensated as an R7 or R8, as appropriate, and is employed by the University of Utah. Three weeks of vacation are provided and scheduled at the fellow’s discretion. A list of available homes or apartments to rent is available from the Office of Graduate Medical Education, University of Utah, or through "Express Rentals," a purchased service which provides an electronic listing updated weekly.
